Contact using elements rather than surfaces

When I use surface to surface contact everything works ok.  When trying to generate contact connections specifying plate elements for regions it doesn't seem to work.  No error messages, no contact, elements penetrate each other as if no contact were present.

Any suggestions. The current state of the model doesn't have useful surfaces for this.

Re: Contact using elements rather than surfaces

Dear Eli,

This could be something related to Shell normals of plate elements:

  • You need to make sure that all elements normals belonging to the same region (either SOURCE or TARGET) are consistently oriented in the same direction.
  • To see Element directions click F6 > LABELS, ... > SHOW DIRECTION = ON > NORMAL STYLE = NORMAL VECTOR
  • To modify element direction use command "MODIFY > ELEMENT UPDATE > ORIENT PLATE NORMAL"
  • Also the contact PAIR regions of the connector should point in opposite direction, one arrow to the other.
  • And very important, the region should be continuous, not islands of elements allowed, not isolated element plates should exist in the same region, OK?.

If problem persist post your FEMAP model and we can take a look to it.

Best regards,

Blas.

Re: Contact using elements rather than surfaces

Thanks,  I'm familiar with element orientation.  Might be the "islands".  Separate areas in surface regions are ok.  There are two separate "islands" of adjacent elements in this region.

Re: Contact using elements rather than surfaces

Removing islands worked.  anybody know why elements works different than surfaces in this regard?

Thank you.

How do you paste images into the post?
