Computer Clusters

I am considering the possibility of building a PC cluster, and was wondering if it
had been done already. Has anybody run benchmarks for Nx Nastran on a Beowulf (or
similar) computer cluster, to compare the performance with single stand alone machines?
It would be nice to know in advance if the performance benefit justifies the effort.
regards,
Carlton

Carlton,
Sorry its taken two months for a response. I don't use the NX Nastran
solver (but I do use Femap 9.3) so I might not be up on the licensing
procedures. Generally, FEA problems benefit from solution in parallel.
~ I have worked with CFD on clusters and large computers in the past that
knocked the socks off standalone workstations. On the simple end, the
local university runs Fluent on eight Dell Precision workstations. On
the more complex (read: expensive) end, there are computers like the SGI
Origin 2000, which can exist as a cluster interconnected by NUMAlink.
The systems running Nastran here are just workstations. Also, the local
university only runs Nastran on workstations. I would like to run
Nastran in a cluster, but for us, licensing costs are not worth it. I
would talk to your Siemens sales rep and see if he can provide you with
performance benchmarks. That way you can weigh the performance gain
versus license costs.
I hope this helps!

I was playing with NX Flow before we got Fluent and it would not run in parallel.
Apparently is may be supported in NX6 but that was a year ago. I'm not sure which
portions of UG code support parallel and which do not.
