Running bulk data files directly in NX Nastran

One of my users is attempting to submit a bulk data file to NX Nastran
directly. When he attempts this, he gets a -18 error, which I believe means
the program could not access a license. The license we have is for NX
Nastran Desktop. Does this license not permit direct submission of data
files to Nastran?
NX Nastran Desktop NXN110G contains these modules.
nx_nas_basic_dsk
nx_nas_nonlin_dsk
nx_nastran_export
nx_nastran_import
ug_struct_pe_solver
Are there other options for importing these files into NX/NX Nastran? I
also have these FEA related licenses in other NX bundles:
ug_scenario
nx_masterfem
id_ext_fem_beam
gfem_ansys
gfem_nastran
ug_nas_bn
nx_ansys_export
ansys_meshers
(Note: I know NX modules and their functionality fairly well, but the FEA
licenses are more of a mystery to me.)

Re: Running bulk data files directly in NX Nastran

Dear Allen,
NX Nastran Basic Desktop (NXN110) is the default Nastran embedded in NX AdvSim (NX13500) and "FEMAP with NX Nastran" (E600) packages bundle. NX Nastran Basic do not allow at all to launch a Nastran run from the MS-DOS window, you need to have NX Nastran Basic Enterprise (NXN001).
NX Nastran Desktop can only be launched by a preprocessor, being this NX AdvSim, Femap or I-deas, is not possible to use it stand-alone.
NX Nastran Enterprise can be run stand-alone (you can open a MS-DOS window and write "nastran input_file.dat param1 param2 ...." and run the solver. This was my preferrred method in the old times where RAM memory limitations on Windows XP-32bits platforms was a real problem when you have loaded NX + FE MODEL and run the nonlinear solver. But nowadays we have XP-64bits or Vista x64 on computers with 8 GB RAM or more, quadcores, etc.. then the need of NX Nastran Enterprise is not critical, you can do the job perfectly with NX Nastran Desktop.
NX Nastran Enterprise runs in Linux & UNIX platforms as well, where NX Nastran Desktop only runs on Windows, this is another important advantage of NX Nastran Enterprise(and reason of being so expensive!)
Best regards,
Blas.

Re: Running bulk data files directly in NX Nastran

Blas,
You are mostly correct in your description of NX Nastran Desktop vs Enterprise,
but a few corrections are needed.

1) NX Nastran Desktop runs on any platform that NX, I-deas, or Femap runs on. That
includes more than just the Windows platform. For example, NX runs on Windows and
Linux, and NXND will work on either. Femap is of course only Windows. I believe
I-deas may still support some Unix and if so, NXND would work with them.

2) It is possible to launch NXND from a command window of the operating system.
The caveat is that you have to run the job on the same machine that the input file
was written by our pre/post software. Further you cannot edit the input file after
it was written, although you could have edited from inside the pre/post when it
was written.
Reasons for submitting NXND from the operating system is so that you can shut down
all other applications - including our pre/post - if you have a job that requires
all the memory resources of the machine. Note that when you submit the job from
the command line, you need to use the keyword PROG=DESK (or PROG=BUNDLE for the
bundled desktop) to use the desktop license. So your job submittal would look something
like this
path_to_nxn_directory/bin/nastran.exe filename.dat PROG=DESK

Re: Running bulk data files directly in NX Nastran

Dear Mark,
1) Yes, you have explained it very well, thanks!.
2) Very interesting what you mentioned about the keyword PROG=DESK, I wasn't aware of it, this removes the limitation to launch a Nastran job from the MS-DOS window.
A trick I suggest to avoid to have to write the path to nastran.exe solver is to define its path in the system environment variable PATH, this way you only need to write "nastran filename.dat param1 param2 ..."
Best regards,
Blas.

Re: Running bulk data files directly in NX Nastran

Hello,
you have got some good explanations about the problem you have posted. I've generated
a batch file with the following lines included:
echo ----
echo starting nastran
echo ----
cd Z:\yourpath\yourpath
"D:\nx6\NXNASTRAN\bin\nastran.exe" yourdatfile.dat bat=no not=no prog=bundle

echo startin next run
cd Z:\yourpath\yourpath
"D:\nx6\NXNASTRAN\bin\nastran.exe" yourdatfile.dat bat=no not=no prog=bundle
I use this batch really often.
Bye, Maik

Re: Running bulk data files directly in NX Nastran

Tried to launch Nastran NX 7.0 with bulk .dat files succesfully with the keyword PROG=BUNDLE.
After the analisys has been completed the bundle license appears to be still in use so I cannot launch the pre/post (NX 7.5) as there is only one license. I have to stop the license service on the server and start it again.
Does anyone know hot to avoid this problem?

Re: Running bulk data files directly in NX Nastran

Giuseppe,

It should not behave this way. NX Nastran only checks out Nastran license features and not any NX Pre/Post license features. Can you send a copy of your license file and the Flex log file. This may give me a clue to what the problem is.

I tried again this morning and it works.

This is the log file:

8:35:41 (ugslmd) IN: "nx_nas_bn_basic_dsk" gcatalano@cadmo502
8:36:23 (ugslmd) OUT: "UG13500" gcatalano@cadmo502
8:36:23 (ugslmd) OUT: "UG13500_gateway" gcatalano@cadmo502
8:36:53 (ugslmd) OUT: "UG13500_nx_masterfem" gcatalano@cadmo502
8:36:56 (ugslmd) OUT: "UG13500_nx_ftk" gcatalano@cadmo502

I think this is the way it shoul be.
Thank you,

Giuseppe,

Yes it looks like it worked successfully this time. Hopefully the previous behavoir was an anomaly.
