I would like to model a friction load (or shear load) caused by a flowing ore on the surface of a chute.
For this I would like to apply shear load (i.e. 'pressure' parallel to the surface of the element), is this possible in FEMAP? I would like to avoid the point load method due to its dependency on the density of the nodes. I'm not modelling the ore but its effect on the chute surface.
The short answer, is yes you can do this, it is supported by Nastran and Femap. Depending on exactly what you want to represent, they are several methods for defining this in Femap.
If the traction is constant, then you can use Model/Load/Elemental and after picking the elements, use the "specify direction" check box a the bottom of this form:
If the traction varies across the surface, then change the radio button to "vector" and then you can define a data surface to describe how the traction varies.
