What are the structural transient analysis types and when to use it?

Hi All,

 

NX Pre/Post has following diffrent solution types for transient analysis:

 

1. SOL103 response dynamics > Create new solution process "Response Dynamics" > Transient Event

2. SOL 109 Direct transient response

3. SOL 112 Modal transient response

4. SOL 129 Nonlinear transient response

5. SOL 601, 129 Advanced non-linear transient

6. SOL 701 Explicite advanced non-linear analysis

 

As a beginer I want to understand

 

- What are the basic assumption with each solution type?

- When to use which kind of transient solution type?

- What are the pre-requisit solution types for each of above SOL type?

- What is the solution setup procedure for each type?

- What kind of nonlinearity it acconts(material?, contact?)

- Which analysis accounts effect of mass (inertia-term)?

- What is the licence requirement for each of above SOL type?

- How SOL 103 (Transient event), SOL109 and SOL 112 is diffrent ?

- How SOL 129 and 'SOL 601,SOL129' is diffrent?

- How SOL 701  and 'SOL 601, SOL 129' is diffrent?

 

I tried reading NX 12 documentation, online help and community post but didn't got overall picture of transient analysis and clear step by step procedure to setup transient analysis. 

 

Please help me on understanding NX transient analysis....

Your question is too common.

You have to spend at least year for reading manuals, making test models, searching on forums (Siemens community and eng-tips) if you want be familiar with all this stuff.

Also, there are two new solvers in NX Nastran version 12 - 401 and 402.

I can answer some of your questions.

 

- What are the basic assumption with each solution type?

SOL 103, 109, 112 are linear (small displacements, strains, linear material).

SOL 129, 601, 701, 401, 402 are nonlinear (large displacements, nonlinear material properties).

Also, AFAIK SOL103 Transient Event and SOL 112 are technically the same or almost the same, they both calculate response based on calculated normal modes.

 

- Which analysis accounts effect of mass (inertia-term)?

All, you have nothing to do in transient if you don’t have mass-inertia.

 

- How SOL 129 and 'SOL 601,SOL129' is different?

129 is old solver from MSC - creators of Nastran, 601,129 is ADINA solver, they are two different solvers. Number 129 stands to represent that both solvers are not static (like SOL106 and SOL601,106), but transient.

 

- How SOL 701 and 'SOL 601, SOL 129' is different?

SOL 701 is explicit (highspeed, ultrahighspeed and ultraultrahighspeed problems like impact of satellite with asteroid, require additional computational efforts, SOL701 is only explicit solver in NX Nastran), SOL601,129 is implicit solver (for low, medium and highspeed problems).

SOL 106, 601, 401 and 402 working with same problems (nonlinear dynamics) but have many differences.

 

If you solving specific problem and want to select appropriate solver for it then you can describe this problem and me and other users can help you with selection of appropriate solver.

A transient analysis, by definition, involves loads that are a function of time. In the Mechanical application, you can perform a transient analysis on either a flexible structure or a rigid assembly. For a flexible structure, the Mechanical application can use the ANSYS Mechanical APDL, Samcef, or ABAQUS solver to solve a Transient Structural analysis.

You can perform a transient structural analysis (also called time-history analysis) in the Mechanical application using the transient structural analysis that specifically uses the ANSYS Mechanical APDL solver. This type of analysis is used to determine the dynamic response of a structure under the action of any general time-dependent loads. You can use it to determine the time-varying displacements, strains, stresses, and forces in a structure as it responds to any transient loads. The time scale of the loading is such that the inertia or damping effects are considered to be important. If the inertia and damping effects are not important, you might be able to use a static analysis instead.
