With the World Cup in Russia kicking off tomorrow, it is worth a reminder that there is a whole industry of sports engineering and design that goes on in the background. Manufacturers of balls (round and otherwise) have been using computational fluid dynamics to enhance the performance and reliability of their products for years.

This year the official ball is the Adidas Telstar 18, is a throw back to the 1970 World cup ball of the same name and has a rather unique paneling design.2919300_big-lnd

Following the throwback theme ... here is an article from the CD-adapco Dynamics Magazine back in 2010, where Wilson Sporting Goods talks through their use of STAR-CCM+ for aerodynamic research.

and below is a simulation of the Adidas Brazuca, official match ball of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

So who do we think is going to win it and be crowned champs?
