Group Features drilling

Hi machinist, i have any question about group future in drilling operation in 2workpiece.

I often have a plate on which I drill openings from two sides. First side drilling into half depth plus edge, second side drilling and edge. I have a problem with the fact that in 1 workpiece I have a group on the opening, so in 2 workpiece (the other side), I can not put these other elements in the group. Then I have to manually select and mark it. The problem is that I have about 300 holes and I have to crush them with a pilot and then with deep drilling. it takes a long time. Then, for example, reverse feature (so I can drill from the other side)waiting hours....

Does anyone have any idea as group to these feature on the other side??

I use IPW how blank in workpiece betwen frist and second side.

Have you tried the following procedure?

  • create a drilling feature or hole-boss geometry
  • add just one of the holes to it
  • create the machining process
  • if the process is working as expected, add the remaining holes to the drilling geometry

Our experience is, that if you do many holes at once, it takes hours, but doing one and adding the rest afterwards is much faster.

Okay, let me try this. But my problem is in re-grouping feature? on the first side and then on the other side?

Do you use "Find features" and "Create feature process" or not?

Have you added mapping rules in MKE to create separate features for both-sided-machining?

Are you creating drilling operation manually?

Hello,

I always create a drilling operation at the beginning.

I choose the suction and it will drill me for the whole part. Then navigate to the feature navigator and create a group feature for all hole(bellow face). When i have group one in frist workpiece so you can not add it anymore to second groups in second workpiece. Maybe I just can not create it.

 

I have not add mapping rules in MKE, and not use create feature process, only group and then manually add drilling or milling oparation to groups.

In general the NX developers would create two separate NX part files, one for machining from the top and one for the bottom. This way they avoid these kind of problems.

Now with two setups in one NX part file, you will have to try some work arounds.

When you group the holes together, copy the feature group into the other setup workpiece or what ever you use as the second setup geometry. In addition make sure that for drilling it is mandatory to set the tool axis to "all axis" in the drilling MCS geometry objects.

I would suggest the following geometry structure:

  • MCS_MACHINE_ZERO
    • WORKPIECE_DRILLING
      • MCS_DRILLING_BOTTOM
      • MCS_DRILLING_TOP
    • WORKPIECE_MILLING
      • MCS_MILLING_BOTTOM
      • MCS_MILLING_TOP

This is what we use and it works for our needs to do drilling from two sides.
