Handling of tool carrier to update standard tools in old parts

How do other users specify the tool carrier to have it automatically update the available tools and their pocket positions?

Using a simple template part with the standard tools applied for a machine will not update any existing part files created through this template part.

A more dynamic approach would be to use a device, which should update the tool carrier in older parts too.

I think that the functionality should allow the following:

  1. have a single source for the tool carrier
  2. allow moving the tools from one pocket to another
  3. allow removing or replacing tools
  4. update the tools in old parts when the parts are opened

Has anyone already gone through that and found a solution to overcome the static tool carrier problem?

Would it even possible to use a device for this kind of task?

Thanks in advance for any pointers Smiley Wink

I have now opened an enhancement request related to this requirement, since I haven't found any suitable way to do this in a simple manner.

If you are also interested in such an enhancement ask GTAC to get added to the following ER.

ER# 9140291 - add dynamic tool carriers to update existing parts with new tools

				ER Template
1.	Short Description of desired enhancement: <Problem rather than a solution>
o	it is not possible to apply changes to the default tools loaded into a carrier in a simple way
2.	What activity in your process is the product not able to currently handle?
o	we want to introduce a way to change tools that are loaded into tool carriers in a simple way
		-	it should not be needed to load a machine
		-	it should not be need to manually move the tools from one pocket to the other
		-	the carrier should not be removed if a machine is retrieved from the library
3.	What result are you trying to achieve? (Please provide as many details as possible.)
o	when we open an old part file that was created with the tool carrier of a specific machine
		-	we want to automatically update the default tools that are currently loaded into the machine
o	when we load the tool carrier of a different machine
		-	the tools that are included in both carriers should move to the new pockets
		-	the tools that are not present in the new carrier should get removed
		-	the tools that are available only in the new carrier should be added
		-	the tools that are no longer available in the tool library should get replaced by similar tools
4.	Do you currently have a workaround?
o	Do all the things above manually, but in most cases we don't clean up, since that is too cumbersome for more than 20 tools contained in the carrier
5.	Do you have a proposal for the solution you envision Siemens PLM providing for this capability?
	o	See requirements listed above
6.	What is the level of productivity gained from such an enhancement?
o	HIGH, better reflect the real life, enforce the digital twin
7.	Other information:
	o	None

Have a pleasant one.

Re: Handling of tool carrier to update standard tools in old parts

Legend

I agree we need something like this. I have 5 axis with 314 tool pockets and already 150 resident tools that live in this machine. I have template to manually copy into new program but no way to update old programs if it changes besides comparing notes in excel file >.<

In my mind it would function similar to how NX notifies user that machine kit has changed and would you like to update it.... that way it notifies the user "Hey the tools you were using are no longer here... please double check"
