How to import a 3D Solid Tool Model (.stp) into tool library (TURNING)

Hello all,

I would like to build a tool database for my shop. I already had all the 3d solid model of tools in *.stp file. so how I can achieve that? I'm much appreciated!

You will have to create a tool in the NX library, then you can add the tool solid geometry by saving the STEP file as a NX part file, named exactly as the tools library reference.

This is all described in the NX help under CAM => Manufacturing General => CAM Libraries => Cutter, tool holder and device libraries => Create a solid turning tool assembly

Using this method, the shape of the tool that we define on the beginning and then import as it relates to checking the paths generated for woorking and collision?
Namely whether it is done to the shape that we described at the beginning (diameter, angle corners, etc.) or based on solid tools which we imported?

If I understand your question correctly:

Yes, 3D Solid tool model can be used for collision checking:

You decide if you want to check tool assembly or internal parametric tool.

Hello Stephan

can you help find nx help how to build 3d cutting tools for nx mill?

with feeds and speeds(programable)

Thank you

Marek,

Do you have any information on building tools for Mill?

Sure. It is nicely described in doc:

https://docs.plm.automation.siemens.com/tdoc/nx/11/nx_help/#uid:xid1128418:index_mfggeneral:xid38470...

Do you have more specific questions?

While for turning tools it is necessary to use this - I'm not a big fan of using 3D solid assemblies for milling tools. I prefer to use parametric holder libraries.

Thanks Marek. What I am looking to do is create the solid holder as described in the link you provided but without a tool bit. I want to create the bit parametrically in order to be able to adjust the length dynamically. I find it time consuming to have to change lengths a program with up to 80 tools if I have 80 assemblies.

Can the holder by itself be retrieved from the library.

The holder can be retrieved separately from the tool library, see the holder tab of the tool dialog.
