NX9 visualize 2d or 3d not displaying collisions/gouges

Phenom
Phenom

I'm hoping its a setting I'm missing.

I cannot get NX9 visualize to display gouges/collisions in rapid mode.

To force a collision, I did a manual edit of a cavity mill operation (removing a return to blank plane move)

In NX4 visualize shows a nice big red collision/gouge.

In NX9 no visual indication of the collision.

It is in the listing of collisions.

Below are pictures of visualize results in NX4 and NX9

Your observation is correct.

If a tool moves through the IPW in rapid mode no material will be cut anymore (in 2D and 3D Material Removal).

To check against that problem and let the system stop simulation activate these settings.

"Check for IPW Collisions"

and

in subdialog  "Collision settings" --> "Pause on Collision"

I'm trying very hard to see a good reason for this.

What is the point of visualize if it doesn't show a VISUAL representation of collisions?

I consider this a serious regression in capability.

Is there any way of switching on the old functionality of visualize?

I could see the case when simulating 4-5 axis mills using the internal toolpath and (as you don't have machine kinematics) rapids with rotary motion may "collide" with the part (in simulation) where they don't in real life.

But it should be our option to turn that on & off, and (to me) if turned on it should show the red (or whatever)  "face" color when the tool rapids thru the part.

Or am I missing something?

I agree, we should have the ability to turn it on or off.  If that ability is not possible then we should definitely see the the collision like it use to show.  Verify is a graphical representation of the cutting and process and to leave some of the process out doesn't seem logical to me.  A gtac engineer once told me, when I had called about the issue when I first noticed it, that certain customers wanted verify to work like that because in actual cutting there wouldn't be a huge slot through the part where a cutter collided into the part.  I think that may have tied into subsequent cutters not collision checking against what would have be "ghosted" stock.  I can see their point a little; although very little.  While their opinion on the matter is technically true, when a collision occurs during simulation it is game over at that point, IMO, and the operation(s) need to be corrected at that point.

What I've seen is you use a mill at B0 (4 axis horizontal mill) then at B180

As long as you are pulled back enough in Z, the B rotates on the real machine and nothing collides. But in visualize (as it does not have kinematics to use) the tool goes straight thru the part to get from one side to the other...making a nice hole.

I'm not sure what the answer is, but it needs more intelligence than it has...

Ken,

There are no rotations in the operation.
The tool axis is at 90° to the Z of MCS.
The machine is a 5axis Head(B) Table(C) Mill Turn.
I have seen gouges because of discrepancies with kinematics, however most of them are covered in the collision settings

Our Issue was we jumped from NX4 to NX9 and I didn't read all the "What's New" and "Caveats" RTFM as usual.

The collision checking does work and the 3D dynamic is much better than it was in NX4.

I would still prefer a Visual indication of the collision.
