Re: Post Builder, G99 is being swapped with G98

I am seeing this setting for the first time Smiley Surprised . I assume it could make changes in output/nc code.

Anyway automatic  G98/99 seems to be correct and automatically switches as tool path tells.

And with proper cycle plane change, there should be no problem.

*In older drill operations, there I just program manual lift Z retract pos in case if operation was set with manual retract.

Because it generates G99 but tool path was even higher than clearence X.

*+  in comments above what to have in cycle plane change.

And there should be no problem.

(So without any additional setting - always, clearence only, clearence initial)

As you said it depends how post is programed.

Best way is to make it operation work by default without any additional settings.

The original post subject kind of got hijacked in this thread. He was looking to get the post to output a G99, and on the exact same day my post outputted a G99 instead of a G98 for me causing a tiny crash. The code on the bottom left "Retract Output Mode" ->  "Always" did not retract and crashed into an island.

For reference, the code below is from the same identical toolpath.

One has "Retract Output Mode" -> "Always", and the other has "Retract Output Mode" -> "Clearance Only"

It depends on how is operation set - transfer rapids, what is in postprocessor....

To that "always" "initial only"  "clearence only" you mentioned..and so on

I have also difference in nc codes but always it is OK without collision.

N15 G99 G81 X40. Y-40. Z-43.004 R-17.5
N16 G80
N17 G00 Z10.

is the same as :

N14 G43 Z10. H
N15 G98 G81 X40. Y-40. Z-43.004 R-17.5

Original question was something about how to change G99/98..because he gets G99 always or something...

I think @joycejo was right.

In G_return address there are  3 variables we can select: 1. "auto", 2. "manual", 3. "auto/manual" -3rd option is correct.

And as we see on picture in original/first post - there is correct variable= mom_output_retract_mode (3rd).

It is possible that sfruehe wants G99 but tool path needs G98 and it is correct.

If he change operation setting or something he should get G98/99 automaticlly and correct.

IMOP "retract output mode" "always" should just be G98 (Always)

"Clearance Only" kicks out allot more code... if your start distance above the hole and retract clearance are the same you will get less, but thus far, this option has been the safe one for me.

I would suggest modifying your template parts so you Always get code that does not crash.

You can also load OTB machines and run, they will crash into walls when set as "always"

I agree. Unless you are doing 1000's of pieces the time savings is minimal.

I tested once with and without retracts on a part with many holes. It added about 1 minute to the cycle. If you have a crash and loose a part, have to reset your offsets, or worst case have a spindle down, you will wish you could go back in time and just let it take a few more minutes.

Also think of the $ the setup guy will save on buying new shorts!!!

Now if you have a big plate with no obstacles, then go for the low clearance.
