I use the modeling text Font set to "Modern".

Really easy to do text this wayeditable for size and loaction

Then machine it with planner milling.

You will have to pick the lines individually as boundaries (hardest part)

Paul -

There is a trade-off.

If you pick each curve/string individually, you can set enagages specific to each set of curves individually.

If you set the "Curve rule" to "Feature curves":

you can pick each model text feature ONCE.  And it will update as letters in the text get added/deleted.  But then you only get one option for the engage, so you might have to use a "plunge" type of engage.

I appreciate all the comments, but I'm still having problems getting my head around it.  Could someone please post a video?

Let's back up a bit.

Are you looking to just do some simple engraving or do you want to engrave curves?

To do some simple engraving use the planar text operation.

If you want to engrave CURVES then you will need to do more work.  Meaning selecting the curves using the curve/point drive method in a Fixd Contour opertion.

In NX Text and curves are two different things

Attached is a video of what I'd like to do in NX.

I tried to post a video but You Tube blocked it. and I cannot upload to here because I do no have the latest version of Flash.  I cannot update that, need sys-admin and he has more important things to do.

The issue is there are *2* kinds of text in NX.

    text_types.png

Depending on the CAM operation type, certain operations work on one, but not the other.  So you need to determine the type of text you have.

Below is in NX10.

1) Modeling text - create using "Curves" tab -> "Text" option

       curve_text.png

2) Drafting text.  Can be created in CAM using "Menu" -> "Insert" -> "Note"

      drafting text.png

DRAFTING text can be machined using a couple operations from template parts:

- Mill_Planar -> Planar text:

     planar_text.png

- "Mill_Contour" -> "Contour text":

     contour_text.png

MODELING text must be done with a more generic operation type (planar mill, fixed contour, etc.) with the drive method / boundary set to "curves" and (for easier picking) the "Curve rule" set to "feature curves"

How do you tell what type of text you have?

Menu -> Information -> object:

          info_object.png

DRAFTING text will look like this:

      info_drafting.png

MODELING text will look like this:

    (edited this picture)

     info_modeling.png

I guess the best starting point is...

Which kind of text do you have (I'm guessing "Modeling")

Re: Simple engraving

Search for engrave text to see previous discussions on this

The planar_text and contour_text operations are for drafting and PMI notes only.

If the designer made a text feature in modeling, then use fixed_contour, Curve/Point drive method, set the selection intent to feature curves as Ken suggests, and pick the feature. Hopefully the designer used a single stroke font.
