Tool Library Management

Is there plan for an integrated solution for those of us not using team center?
Anyone have a third party program to do this?

Re: Tool Library Management

Can you offer some more details on what you are looking for?

Are you referring to a customer tool library? Or commercial tool catalogs?

Have you looked at MRL Connect for NX? You still need a minimal TC install inthe background, but it is not apparent to native users. There is a Tech Tip from a couple years ago.

Re: Tool Library Management

Hi Mark

I'm referring to the user tool libraries and holder libraries in NX for those of us who are smaller installs and don't have team center.

Right now (as far as I'm aware) the only way to manage these is either in a setup file or through the text .dat file.

My goal for 2016 was to have us start using the tool library a lot more in our shop.

Re: Tool Library Management

So we are talking about the ASCII libraries in native.

Basically, OOTB there is one set of libraries per configuration, and you can export, search, and retrieve either tool with holder, or holder alone.

I am not sure what kind of management you are looking for.

Can you explain what you want to do?

Re: Tool Library Management

Without being in a specific manufacturing file

how do you edit current library objects?

Create new objects?

Organize objects?

For tools and holders -

You edit by retrieving in to NX, editing, and exporting to the library, replacing the original.

You create new by exporting from NX.

For tools with assembly part files, it's a little more complicated.

Not sure what you mean by organize.

Re: Tool Library Management

For organization, it depends how you want to set up the library

If you want all tools for all machines in one library, you can use the "holder type" or "libref" prefixes/naming convention to minimize picking the wrong tool (there was a thread here recently on doing that).

If you want different text files for different machines, then (briefly):

You will have to create different configuration .dat files (in ...\MACH\resource\configuration).  You will want to set (I think this gets them all) at least the .tcl file for each of these items:

LIBRARY_TOOL
LIBRARY_DEVICE (?)
LIBRARY_HOLDER
LIBRARY_TRACKPOINT
LIBRARY_SEGMENTED_TOOL

Then copy the original .tcl files to the new names, and edit the .tcl files to point to different text file names.

I would then create (one) "Blank" template (with all tools/holders/devices/etc.removed) and then copy that to each required name (in both english & metric folders)

Hope this makes sense.

Re: Tool Library Management

Hello Ken,

Can you explain this procedure?
Because i don't understand everything.

I'll try to list the step. For example i need two different tool library because I have two machines:

1. Copy cam_general.dat (in ...\MACH\resource\configuration)
for example: cam_general_2.dat

2. Set (at least) the .tcl file for each of the items:
LIBRARY_TOOL
LIBRARY_DEVICE (?)
LIBRARY_HOLDER
LIBRARY_TRACKPOINT
LIBRARY_SEGMENTED_TOOL

for example for LIBRARY_TOOL: (in cam_general_2.dat)

LIBRARY_TOOL,${UGII_CAM_LIBRARY_TOOL_ASCII_DIR}dbc_tool_ascii.def,${UGII_CAM_LIBRARY_TOOL_ASCII_DIR}dbc_tool_ascii_2.tcl

3. copy the original .tcl files to the new names

for example copy dbc_tool_ascii.tcl and change the name to dbc_tool_ascii_2.tcl

But i can't understand how it can work. Because there is an only variable:

UGII_CAM_CONFIG C:\Siemens\NX10\mach\resource\configuration\cam_general.dat

These steps are correct? what should i do?
Thanks,
Marco

Re: Tool Library Management

What you do is select a different cam configuration .dat file to get the "other" data.

Preferences -> Manufacturing -> Configuration tab

Select the configuration file (e.g. cam_general_2.dat) and "OK" out.

Now if you create a tool, and save it to the library, it should show up in the "other" files as defined by cam_general_2.dat

Re: Tool Library Management

Thank you!
But it could be the same thing if i create two .bat with different MACH folder for example.
I don't undestand the advantage on using this method.

Because another issue is about the FBM with more machines, obviously with different tool libraries, I know that I can choose the machine inside the MKE but it will be connected with only one tool library.

The only one possibility is to have two different MKE which are refered to two different tool libraries. Can you suggest me a solution?
