error - cannot build grid (drive geometry will be erased)

Hello All

I'm new to using NX9 and I'm playing around trying to create a toolpath using the variable contour surface area method.

When selecting adjacent drive surfaces I get the error "cannot build grid (drive geometry will be erased)"

I'm trying to create a roughing toolpath for a model F1 crankshaft  between centres on a 4 axis mill

Can anyone shed any light on the problem?

It is impossible to use an entire body as the drive geometry.

In your case you should create a bounding cylinder and use the cylindrical face as the drive geometry.

Re: error - cannot build grid (drive geometry will be erased)

Thank you

I then seem to end up with this.......

Re: error - cannot build grid (drive geometry will be erased)

Do not use the solid body as the drive surface, just the cylindrical face.

Never use a body as the drive geometry.

Re: error - cannot build grid (drive geometry will be erased)

Many thanks Stefan

ok ... so now I have a cylinder and the face of the cylinder is selected as drive geometry.

With the entire crank specified as the part, and no cut areas defined, this is the toolpath that gets generated with the tool aligned along the x axis. I can change the tool vector etc but don't seem to be able to generate a tool path where the crank rotates about the C axis and cutting motion is in Z / Y

Same if I select cut area as below ....

Any thoughts on the best approach?

Re: error - cannot build grid (drive geometry will be erased)

I managed to achieve this when trying out a cam lobe, but in that situation, I selected the upper and lower faces of the lobe as drive geometry.Capture7.PNG

[ Edited ]

Attached find a sample part file.

Make sure to select the correct cut direction.

Re: error - cannot build grid (drive geometry will be erased)

Thank you Stefan, unfortunately the zip file only seems to contain empty folders ....

Re: error - cannot build grid (drive geometry will be erased)

It contains a part file, make sure to use 7-zip v16.02, any older release will not be able to open it correctly.

Re: error - cannot build grid (drive geometry will be erased)

ok sorted. I now have the part open.

That looks perfect ... exactly what I want to do.

Please give me some time to look at how you set it up.

Stefan ... I can't thank you enough.
