Constraining subassembly to parent assembly

Genius
Genius

Hi,

I'm a SolidWorks convert, and in SW I was able to position subassemblies into a parent assembly by using constraints/'mates'. I'm trying to do the same in NX, but the constraints dialog window doesn't let me select any components/faces/edges in the subassembly.

Can anyone help? I have searched for this issue and haven't found it anywhere, so perhaps I've done something wrong. I've checked my selection filters and they are OK.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Axry,

We will be able to help you, but we need a little more than this.

Can you record a movie or add some screenshots?

First thought...have you checked your selection filters?  make sure you can select components, and the feature type you are after.

Layers could be tricky. At assembly level, check if the component body layers are selected as “Visible Only”.

Hi,

Unfortunately I'm unable to record a video as I'm on a work PC with no recording software. A screenshot won't really show very much as the issue is that I can't select my subassy, so visually there is nothing to show. However, see below:

In the above screenshot, the red component is part of the parent assembly, with each row of hooks being the subassembly. The subassembly is not selectable when in the Constraints dialog.

So lets check some things. You did not include a picture of your assembly navigator.

BTW. Did you try recording a movie from inside NX?  Tools tab, or ALT+F5?

Questions:

1. Your component and your sub assembly are both components of the current work part?

2. You can show and hide them in by selecting them in the graphics window?

3. Can you move both of them using move components?

4. You have no assembly overrides?

5. You have no arrangements in the assembly?

5. You are not in an exploded view?

6. Pressed reset on top right of the dialog?

If you answer Yes on all questions then it is time to call GTAC.
