Create NX Titleblock Template

Pioneer
Pioneer

Hello,

I hope this is the Right Area for this Topic.

At the moment i am working with NX 11 & TC 11.3. I imported the Siemens Templates for NX from "UGII\templates" to Teamcenter. Now the Templates for Drawings, Modelling are available at the TC Managed NX. Now i have to customize the Titleblock. I dont want to customize every Template manually. I want to customize the Titleblock once for all Templates. Something like a Titleblock Template which is used from all Drawing Templates. Is that possible? How?

The better forum is the NX Design one.

This is for NC programming & Additive Mfg and similar.

But the answer to your question is...

Create one sheet size, set everything up the way you want.

Then "Save as" to the next sheet size, edit the sheet size, fix anything that requires fixing.

Repeat until done.

I took another route - I have an API program to create all this stuff.

So when (not if) I discover something that needs fixed, I blow away the current stuff & re-run the API program...

if you create a new drawing template you can also create 1 template part.

With "edit sheet" you can resize the sheet to every size you want.

For the most customers i just make 1 template (in the most common used size) and from there the can rescale the sheet to the size needed.

By doing this you only need to maintain 1 drawing template part

I only have to do this in Teamcenter managed NX.

Yes. Pattern is an old trusty way. Benefit is that it saves on memory and everyone will see the exact same titleblock inside the company with the same settings.

You will need to share this setting with all your sites. I don't think other places will see this change.

OK...

Also try Custom Symbols, use as a tool, to update your drafting objects on all your templates, then make a release version with smashed symbols.

Patterns have good & bad points

Good points:

- everyone shares the same patterns

- reduced memory / disk space usage.

- if you need to change your borders, you edit the patterns and "voila" *all* drawings see the new titleblock

Bad points

- if you export your NX files as NX files to other companies, you MUST send them the patterns (or "explode" them into the part before you send it)

- if changing your patterns would require an ECN of an existing drawing to indicate the border changed, you have to save patterns with a "revision" string as part of the pattern name.

- patterns do not resize (e.g. if you need to change a drawing from A1 size to A2 size)

You would still need a different pattern size for each sheet size (and if your "extra" sheets in a drawing, e.g. sheet 2, 3, 4... are different/have "reduced" titleblock, you need a different pattern for each sheet size for them as well).

Patterns CAN reference attributes (IIRC)

All in all, I would suggest using the new titleblock/border objects.

I still can't see the point of titleblock templates at all.
What's the benefit ? Title blocks are not your typical everyday's job,
quite the opposite, it's something you create/modify pretty rarely, so
what's to be gained in automating something you do once in a blue moon ?
Automation is required when you do something complex, title blocks are
very simple, and something whose details can be much better addressed manually.

And when title blocks change how do you address that with templates ?
It seems there isn't any "automation" for this, you have to concoct something
yourself with journals and the likes to chase all the drawings around, a hellish
job which is at best a large waste of time (if you ever manage to catch them all).

Compared to this, what you mention as the "bad points" of patterns makes me smile,
I have done these several times and took me nothing in terms of time, and even
less in terms of complication, these are simple, straightforward operations.

And, yes, patterns DO reference attributes beautifully, once imported they read
them and they appear there read-only, which is perfect, so why should we mess up
things using TB templates ? Is it just for the sake of using a brand new command
instead of using the "old" patterns ? At Siemens there is clearly the need for
fancy new commands to be featured on brochures, but as engineers we should be
intelligent enough to choose what really works, not what is fashionable.

Ok, i understand how the Patterns work now, but at the moment i have still a problem to implement it to Teamcenter.  How i can set the UGII_PatDir in Teamcenter? I think it could be a Preference? But which one?

Have anyone an Idea?

I've only ever used native mode pattern files in TC (by defining UGII_PATDIR).  But once a pattern is used this way, you can't point it to a TC pattern without deleting/re-adding the pattern.

You could look in the Solutions database (https://solutions.industrysoftware.automation.siemens.com/) to see if someone has posted info.
