Creating a helical-style groove on a non-circular face - NX12

Hi Everyone,

 

I am trying to create a groove that has a helical profile along a surface that has a non-circular face, almost elliptical.

 

The closest I have got is shown in the attached file

 

If anyone has a solution then please let me know!

Hi @JL95 

Project helix curves, then create sweep feature using projected curve and subtract it from target solid body.

What is wrong with the example you attached ?
- Knowing that might help us provide ideas... :-)
also, if you can upload actual geometry or descriptive illustration , it would help.

Is there a way to keep the grooves parallel like on the model I have attached, as in, to avoid the 'wavy' bits on the top and bottom?

The example I attached was quite complicated to model and I was hoping for a better solution :-)

Hi @JL95 ,

Try changing Projection direction from 'Toward line' to 'Along vector' and select 'YC'. It might help.

jl95 : you did not tell how you modeled your version. we do not know that. :-)

The wavy shape is resulting from the fact he projects a helix onto a flat face, it's the natural resulting shape.
If you want straighter lines, either you find a method of creating a non-cylindrical helix , or model the zig-zag shape differently.

Amolkadam, i think you are confusing the methods used when creating a swept surface with this projected curve, Vector in this case will simply project the curves in a given direction and not concentric towards a center placed line.

If the projection vector doesn't work, then try creating 2 guide curves (top & bottom of the groove at the outer surface) & see if they work better
