Deviation Gauge tool: how are distances evaluated?

Hi,

I'm working a lot with the "Deviation Gauge" tool of the reverse engineering toolbox lately, to obtain deviation data between STLs and CAD surfaces.

While I have no particular problem in using this tool, I need to know some additional information about how the tool works and on the effect of the parameter that can be set in the GUI or by using the NXopen library.

I couldn't find the information that i need anywhere..

1) How does the deviations are evaluated? I mean, what kind of algorithm is used to find the closest point on the selected surfaces?

2) How do exactly work the "Spatial resolution" "Measurement Samples" parameters that I can set in the nxopen library for the deviation gauge tool? (https://docs.plm.automation.siemens.com/data_services/resources/nx/10/nx_api/en_US/custom/open_c++_r...

I understand the general effect of the parameters, but I can't find an accurate description of how these parameters are used.

Thanks,

Francesco B.
