Freeform Modeling

What is the best practice for creating a surface that is tangent with two different faces?  In this scenario we are creating a bead that is a combination of surfaces between an upper and lower bead.  The light blue is the transitional surface that was created with variational sweep.  Is there a better way to do this?  The beads width and depth are variable depending on the part geometry.  So we need something to follow a guide path and allow multiple sections to be defined as the shape varies.

Through curve mesh is another option.
