Importing step files recipe

Hi Everyone!

I am completely new to this community, but I see that questions asked here are always very well replied, so decided I will try it out.

My problems is that I download CAD files from sources like GrabCAD and these are very often in step format. Since NX support several step formats (step203, step214 and step242), I dont now which version to chose and have to go through all of them until the part finally shows up. Is there somekind of recipe on how to do this or somewhere to find the format version?

If you open the step file with notepad you can find in the begin the step version that is used for the export.
If you find this you can use the best import for the step file.

You can refer to the following links to have clear understanding of difference between these formats.

Thank you for a quick reply!

I tried this and the document started with the following:

ISO-10303-21

Is it the 03 part I am looking for, meaning step203?

what method are you using to "import"?

File-> Open " *.stp"

 or

File -> Import -> STEP204 or STEP214

 or

Windows Start -> Programs -> Seimens NX__-> "Step AP203" or "Step AP214"

There will be a .log file in the current folder, it includes information on number and types of entities imported and any errors.

Another possible problem is view scale, try ctrl+F (View Fit) to fit the view after import.

i tried using both file--- new ----import & Windows Start -> Programs -> Seimens NX__-> Step AP203 or Step AP214 and .log file meant to be syslog file right?

not syslog

There is a log file created by the translator.

It is usually in the folder where the the part file is created.

Depending how you run the translator it is named the same as the step file (ie 1234.stp -> 1234.log) or called UI.log or step214ug.log

if you can post an example step file with this problem I could test it.
