I used this method and it works well! The subtract operation took a while but the resulting solid is pretty lightweight! Thanks!

One consideration, when breaking out the boolean operation from the extrude command, is that your filesize is going to increase.  Take my benchmark test for example, the time to extrude/subtract remained the same, however, the increase in filesize was fairly significant:

It's not so noticeable when you're only working with small patterns, but it's something to keep in mind.  BTW, the above test was completed in NX 10 and NX 12.

into NX there isn't a command that creates a statistic related to the time that features need to be resolved. A journal?

We have internal tools that we use to time events.  If you're experiencing problems with specific parts/command please open an IR with GTAC and they can help you.
