Limit clients on license server with physical mac addresses

Pioneer
Pioneer

We have a server with 60 floating licenses and we want to define the client PC's with their composite ID's on server so that only these computers can get license and launch NX11.0.2.

Is this possible? Which part of the license file on server should we edit?

You can't limit clients via the license file.

If you have 'node locked' bundles (as opposed to 'floating' ones) then they will already be locked to either a dongle or a MAC address, limiting the usage to the specific dongle or computer with the MAC address.

If you have floating bundles, then you are able to limit their usage by using an options file.

There is a document in GTAC which covers this: Using a license options file

Note in the install files (DVD from Siemens, or ZIP you download from their web server) there is a documentation folder, which has a PDF describing all the OPT file options as well.

I'm at home now, so I don't have it readily available to tell you the exact filename.

Ok thanks for the tip, we have managed to create an opt file and included computers with their hostnames. The server runs OK now.

As far as I’ve seen in describing pdf, we can only define computers with username, hostname or IP. There is no Mac adress option I guess. Is this correct? Because hostname of a pc is not unique and this may lead misuse.
Any ideas?

You can use IP address ranges or specific IP addresses.

HOST_GROUP ABC 001.002.*.* 002.003.*.*
INCLUDE NX10105 HOST_GROUP ABC

Juts be aware of DHCP changing addresses for whatever reason

How about mac adresses (for example 12:ab:34:56:c7)

I just go by user names. Makes management a whole lot easier because users upgrade and change computers over time but their user names do not change.

Yeah but there will be like 2000 students and we don’t want unauthorized ones to use NX.

Then I suggest you hire a student ;-) to write a bit of code to create the OPT file "on-the-fly" from a list of usernames.

Can you get the user info from class registrations (or whatever) to automate getting the list of users?

If so, then the utility could just be re-run if students add/drop the class (during the semester)

Note you'll also have to allow the professors/TAs/whomever needs "permanent" access, but isn't registering for one of the classes...

If you don't automate this, it will be a PITA.

Would the users be using their own PCs to run NX, or only PCs in a designated "lab"?

If the latter, would the IT group support setting them up with a unique IP address range to allow filtering based on IP (or do other users, who should not have access to NX, use the same PCs?)

Note the user names do NOT all need to be on the same line, e.g. something like this should work:

GROUP NX_USERS asmith
GROUP NX_USERS bsmith
GROUP NX_USERS csmith
GROUP NX_USERS dsmith

INCLUDEALL GROUP NX_USERS

Might make it easier to automate...
