So any suggestions would be helpful
Any ideas..how to get back?

One thing to check... Is he trying to start NX, under the exact same user? And has he borrowed the correct version of the license. If you have more than one version of NX installed, you can only start the version you borrowed the license for.
If he has no network connection of some sort, it will be very difficult. If he only has some form of network access. The only suggestion I can give right now is: Download the emergency license and use that on the local system (it can be installed on any machine). This way he can work for the next 7 days.
For the next time: When borrowing a license, after borrowing, always disconnect from the network (also wifi), and test if youcan still start NX. Because if you are still connected to the network, NX will always first try to check out a license from the server. It's not until it cannot check out a license, it will look for borrowed license.
Just a thought... you said he does not have any HW to make VPN or network connections.
Is it possible he's disabled all networking on his machine since he can't use it anyway?
It used to be what FlexLM would fail if all the networking was disabled because it needs to get the MAC info from the NIC (an old bug involved disconnecting the ethernet cable from NIC - that was the days before wireless networks).
If it worked before he left, than sometihng about his amchine must have changed since, and the NIC is the most likely change. Maybe wifi was on during test and off now, or simlar with ethernet, or some other NIC. Or perhaps there is a virtual NIC interfering.
An "ipconfig/renew" might clear things up, assuming the NIC was physically ON?
Like I said, just a shot in the dark; no evidence that this is your issue, but since your user is stuck...
You might want to run the NX licenseing utility "getcid.exe" when he borrows the license, then when he tries to use it.
It may point out the issue?
