NX freezing with "Updating objects..." message

Hi all,

running NX 8.5.1.3 on Win7SP1x64 / Xeon@2.53GHz / 12GB RAM / Quadro FX1800.

I have a small assembly with 33 individual components (220 total), simple mechanical parts of a conveyor. Whenever I change (or create new) an attribute of a component and hit OK to apply changes NX freezes for a minute or two with "Updating objects..." message. It does not matter if I do this within assembly or make displayed and then edit attributes.

This is not the only situation NX freezes, it freezes with "Work on displayed assembly", moving component, constraining components, probably anything that calls for "Updating objects..."

A colleague of mine had this problem before (on NX8.0 same machine), but its was worse - it took minutes and minutes to "update objects".

So its time to figure out the solution.

And no - exporting to parasolid and back is no a solution, all the parts are reused and allready with drafting done.

I did part clean up - did not help.

It is (and was) specific to that certain assembly, wich is a part of a larger assembly. And the later is fine, no freezing, no lagging, unless of course I load the buggy one too.

Regards

have you looked in the log file, to see if there is anything there?

As a "stab in the dark" I wonder if there is a circular loop somehow (part A references B which references C which references A), so as it goes thru the assembly it keeps going round-n-round.

As a test..

Open the assembly

close all but one sub assembly/part

do the update

open one more sub assembly/part

do the update

etc.

Try & narrow down which components/sub assemblies are the "problem" ones.

Don't really know where the logs are Smiley Happy

I allready new the problematic sub assembly. I simply switched it to History-Free mode and there is no more freezing.

Log files:

In NX 10 session:

"Menu" -> Help -> log file

Note that by going to "history free" mode, you wipe out all the existing features in the part (see the part navigator - all the block/hole/extrude/etc. features are gone!).  The *only* remaining way to edit the solid is using synchronous options.

I'm not sure the behavior of history free mode in an assembly (i.e. does it wipe out the features in ALL the parts, or just the work part, or ?)

But I would be wary of ever using this "solution"

You can have history free assembly with history components and any mix of the two. It affects only the work part. And I love synchronous modeling Smiley Wink
Sure it wipes alot, not sure exactly what but it did its trick.

And in that log file... well you have to know what to look for. Error 5, plenty of those, but thats security related. Nothing suspicious for me Smiley Happy

BTW, in history free mode you have a choice whether to create (keep if switching) features like holes, blend, chamfer and probably some other.

I like history free mode. Too bad it is going away...

"And you heard this where?"

The NX 10 help docs say that:

History-Free mode will be retired in NX 11. For more information, see the Release Notes.

for example see:
