NX10 - Import a surface's x y z data from a text file

Experimenter

Hello all,

I have a text file of x,y,z data produced from a proprietary stereo vision setup. The data is of a surface (say the ground). The XYZ data can be arranged however is necessisary for NX to interpret it. But what i am looking to find out is how do i import this xyz data into NX and have it produce a surface for me?

Thank you!

Hi Mellman,

A few years ago I assisted a Siemens customer wanted a similar workflow.

This is how we did it back then:

  1. Import text file via -> File -> Import -> Points from file
  2. Change file type to text format (each point file contained a planar loft curve)
  3. We imported several text file, where each text file had a common value (in their case, it was the z direction)
  4. Studio spline -> select each planar points
  5. Through Curve -> select each Studio spline
  6. Check for any “irregularities”, where you can see unusually “bumps”, or use Analysis Reflection.

In addition to @SamKuan's comment, check out the "fit surface" and "through points" commands. These will create a surface given points as input. You can find a python journal here that helps automate the process of using the "through points" command.
