@Stefan_Pendl@DaveK,

Yep, very well aware of the Siemens policy that popped up out of nowhere around the NX10 timeframe.  John Baker used to post the bitmap images for each major release because the icons were eventually hard coded into the software versus being included with the install as actual .bmp files.

Regardless of what the docs state, it never hurts to ask does it?  Where would we be today if users didn't ask for change or improvements with anything NX related?

Besides, we're talking icons here - not the keys to the NX kingdom by any means.  This policy change seems to be making a mountain out of a mole hill, to be honest.

John always had to ask for permission to make them available and then it was a time-limited custom download, where one needed to know the exact file name to succeed.

In general everything is copyright protected and commercial software protects every single bit, even if it is part of a bit-map ;-)

Yes, I used to provide those files, in a manner where they were ONLY accessible by organizations and individuals who had a valid software license.  This was done with the approval of the executive responsible for the development of NX and who also happened to be my boss.  However, things have changed since then, both in terms of the way certain aspects of the product are now being implemented to say nothing of the fact that neither I nor my former boss are working for Siemens PLM, as we have both retired some time ago.

@JohnRBaker,

Yes, the GOOD old days - seems like yesterday. I always appreciated what lengths you went to in order to try and support the users. Was a never ending part of the job, I'm sure. Hope things are going well for you.

@Stefan_Pendl,

The hoops that were jumped through do not matter - the very same practices could be done to this very day.

Not all commercial software is that way - M$ certainly doesn't take that same stance about some of their OS icons. They're routinely plastered all over the internet and I believe one can download certain icons for nothing from M$. I would call what you're describing more of a paranoid trend that is just blindly followed from one company to the next without any real basis of which we've been made aware, not that it really matters.

It matters not what is a trend or practice, what company A & B does in regards to what they copyright or what is posted on some web document - asking for a change doesn't hurt a single thing other than maybe someone's pride.

Hi,

Does anyone know the actual reason for the icons change?

Hi,

In the 1950's color television becam standard.

In 2019 NX goes back to black and white.

I almost can not believe it. Because for me this is not a progress. But it's true, the icons changes from modern color and 3D design to grayscale 2D line design. Its much more harder to distuingish the different icons.

And a lot of functions became a new symbol.

My company pays a lot of money every year for support and further develop NX. Now all our about 500 users have to learn the new icons. That will cost us a lot of time and money again. It is not helpfull!

Siemens has promised that NX will be easyer to use with each update.

Look for yourself...

NX1847_UI_1.png

Some 3D icons became a brigter color, thats good. But others got worse.

NX1847_UI_2.png

For example, the wrench icon for sub menues to edit and the lock. Editable menues are yellow others with nothing to edit are grayed out. Easy to distinguish.

In NX1847 its 2D, gray and ligt gray!

The difference from the closed lock to the open lock is very small.

They do not mean that seriously.

NX1847_UI_3.png

And here the standard icons for customizing the ribbon bars. Its really like a change from color tv to black and white tv.

(Actually the tv world changes now from Full HD to 4K HD, not to black and white.)

NX1847_UI_4.png

I hope this was really a slip-up and SIEMENS wil correct it until the next update.

Kind regards

TomS

Hi TomS,

Any changes to any UI will stir up emotions, some will like it, others will not, but in the end we all learn to work with it because we are professional, intelligent engineers.  In my opinion the new interface looks clean, modern and fresh, the icons have a more professional appearance and less like a cartoon. Pleasing everyone with UI changes is difficult, I suggest impossible, but we try our best to make it as straight forward as we can and include new help tools to improve the user experience.

@Paul_Bevan, Hi Paul,

@LaurieM

Thanks for you feedback.

What I like in general about the restructuring-redesign of the icons is the fact that everything now looks organized and homogene what FORM concerns; Trimetric looking icons now all have the same angles - much cleaner! Now there are very recognizable accents that reoccur between the many applications NX has. I've been asking for this many years during Beta testing. Thank you.

But I do believe things went a bit wrong what the use of colors concerns. Or should I say the absence of colors.

I'm not looking for a 120 color Caran d'Ache crayon box but hardly anything else than shades of Grey, LightBlue and Orange is not exactly refreshing either.I suggest to widen the pallete a bit...Smiley Wink Heart

To name a few immediate observations:

- Synchronous tools are not recognizable anymore.

In another (beta)thread I suggested this:

2018-11-06_14.gifNX12 vs NX CR synchronous icons

and this as a proposal:

Synchronous NX CR proposal icons.pngSynchronous NX CR proposal icons

- The pale blue for the sketches is too pale compared to the grey background. It doesn't stand out enough. Maybe a tad stronger?

- The sketcher icons don't show points anymore. A piece of valid information about the tool thrown out the window.

- The application icon for sheetmetal doesn't show a sheet thickness

- Unite and Extrude might use a color of their own. (I remember @chl  suggested some very good looking alternatives)

- assembly constraints icon is almost unrecognisable

- the new wave geometry linker icon is much better now!

- Clearance analysis icon has more red than before and looks very good and intuitive. And still consitent with the rest of the new icons.

I suggest a few extra colors might not hurt - if wisely used. And maybe also different tints of colors.

e.g. for sketcher's end points - use a darker blue dot.

I believe-hope this is still an ongoing process and NX development is open for change-improvements. Smiley Wink

Thank you,

Frank
