Release planning

Hello,

we are currently on NX10.0.3 (MR3) and according to SFB-NX-8110 it is maintained until 09. November 2017

In the past we skipped one major release and chose to switch at the end of maintainance.

According to the release of NX11 in august 2016 it is not very likely that NX12 will be ready in November 2017 or at least there will be no MR released yet. (we normally test the MR and report errors and in the end roll out MR3)

Are there any planned dates for NX12 yet?

Is it a problem to use a not maintained release?

regards,

Josh

Re: Release planning

The issue with using an "out of support" release is that if you have a problem, you (probably) need to replicate it in a "supported" release before you get a lot of help from GTAC (you can always report the issue, but if it is an out-of-support release the solution may be "install a newer release").

Maybe have 1 PC with 10.0.3. MP9 on it (not used for production work) (to replicate issues)?

Re: Release planning

Hi Josh,

End of maintenance for NX simply means that we are no longer providing fixes for the releases specified in the SFB, it does not mean that you won't be supported by GTAC NX Support, and you won't need to replicate an issue in a supported release before you get a lot of help from GTAC.

GTAC NX Support are here to help you regardless of what version you're using.  If you have a problem we try to reproduce it in the same version, perform regression testing to identify which version introduced the problem, and test future versions to see if the problem has been fixed (in the event that you can upgrade to the next MR or MP).  We also try as best we can to provide a workaround, sometimes several - users on this forum can testify to that.  The last thing we want is for workflow to be interrupted, so we do what we can to get you going again as soon as possible.

NX12 is on schedule to be released close to date you mention above, but you're correct that this will be the base release, and the first MR will be a few months later, so well into 2018 for MR3.

There are no problems with using an NX release that has reached end of maintenance.  However, you won't get any fixes in that version.  Any problems you identify will be fixed in a newer MP, MR or a future 'full' NX release.  GTAC NX Support will definately support you.

NX 10.0.3 will be supported with Maintenance Packs (MP) until November 2017.  MP9 is the latest. You can use a release beyond it's end of support, but there will be no more fixes in that release.

It is to early to be talking about specific NX12 dates, but you should be able to move from NX 10.0.3 to NX 12 without loss of support. If you want to go to 12.0 instead of waiting for 12.0.1, consider applying to the beta testing program. You could test NX 12 beta and report any PRs next summer, before the release, and have more confidence in deploying NX 12.0.

Re: Release planning

Is the release cycle still every ~18 months?  Nov 2017 would be about 15 months since 11 was released.

Not that it really matters, just curious from a planning stand point.  At one time I thought Unigraphics, or UGS was on a 12 month cycle, that was deemed to short by customers.

Re: Release planning

There is no fixed release cycle. The releases are determined by the amount of content, as well as business needs. We also make adjustments based on changing needs, which is why you won't see us quoting dates too far in advance. We know things will change ;*)

If you planning a major deployment, please work through your account team, and we work together to coordinate your deployment plan with our release schedule.
