Smooth/simplify an intersection curve

I'm cutting a model section view of an STL file, with thousands of facets, so the intersection curve is a mess.  Is there a good (quick) way to clean it up so it's easier on our waterjet programmer, and keep the curve 'true'?

I've tried Smooth Curve String, but didn't see much change.  Possibly not using the correct settings.  I looked at "Smooth Spline", but I'd like to keep things parametric.

First I would divide the curve if there are any extreme changes on direction or shape, then use the Fit Curve command with the Fit Spline option controlling the degree and number of segments.

can you share a pic? I think I may have worked on something similar to this in the past.
