A question on Nx IGES import

I would like to import a single patch from Rhino into Nx. At first, I export the patch into IGES in Rhino, and then import it into Nx. But something strange happens. As you can see in the second graph, the single patch is decomposed into several patches. Does anyone know the reason for it? And how to import a patch from Rhino into Nx so that the number of patch keeps same?

I'm having a similar issue importing iges files.

 

Try this

 

Go to file->import>IGES

 

Click on the advanced tab in the Import IGES dialog box

 

Click on the “Automatic sewing of surfaces” check box.

 

My understanding of IGES is that it only contains surface (or patch) information and not how those surfaces should be stitched together

Hey, thanks for your reply.

I tried the setting you mention, but one patch imported from Rhino into NX are still cut into several patches. As you can see in the graph below, the imported patch has different control points compared with the original patch in Rhino. 

I think the IGES file can only perserve the geometry of the surface, but it will change the control points of patches.

Try the Fill surface command. I'm using it right now on some iges files.

Hey, thank you for your reply.

 

I first use "Extract Geometry" command to convert all the surfaces into Nurbs and used fill surface command,trying to merge multi-patches into one patch. but I got a different surface compared with the original one.

As you can see from the graph below, the transpart surface is original patch, the blue one is the result of filling surface. I played around with G0 and G1 continuity, but I still can't get the original geometry.

 

Are there any other way to deal with IGES file?

Out of curiosity...

Why is it so important to end up with 1 patch?

If the NX surfaces match the Rhino surfaces, why can't you use them "as is" (or if need be, sew them together then use the sewn surface)?

I am studying IGA now. I would like to know how does the IGES file work and why in diffrent CAD system, the same IGES file can have different control points for the same surface.

Also control points work as degree of freedom for IGA analysis. It will be great that I can pass a surface from Rhino into NX and keep the same control point.

At the same time , doing IGA analysis on multi-surface is more difficult than single patch surface~

What is the degree of the surface in rhino (in both U and V directions)?

 

I'm not sure the limitations of the IGES format, but perhaps the degree of your surface is more than IGES can handle, so it gets split up.

 

NX is limited to a maximum spline degree of 24, but I've never seen anything over degree 7 used in a production model. Also, a single face can be made of multiple patches. After importing the iges file into NX 9, every face in the resulting model has multiple patches.

This is the patch infomation.

The degree in U and V are both 4. (So this is a normal case)

Once the patch is imported into NX, the degree in U and V is still 4, but the position of control point changes and more control points are added. 

Maybe as you have said, in some cases, if a surface is imported into NX, it might be cutted into several patches.
