Creating an "outside dimensioned" L-Profile with the Flange feature

Hi all,

 

We sometime come across following type of flange:

E.g. L-profile; inside bend angle 135°, both flanges with outside dimensions need to be e.g. 100mm to the virtual intersection point.

 

I can't find a way to do this in NX.

 

In an old software we used to use for 3D CAD (Radan) we would do it like this:

Interesting problem.  The flange feature can create the 100mm dimension for the flange no problem however it does adjust the tab length depending on the Inset option.

You could drive the base tab length with an expression that's dependent on the angle.

 

  • Define the flange angle as a variable, say BendAngle=45
  • Create the TAB and for the length use a formula
    100-((Sheet_Metal_Material_Thickness+Sheet_Metal_Bend_Radius)*tan(BendAngle/2))
  • Create the flange with Length reference = Outside and Inset = Bend Outside

Then, Tab and Flange lengths = 100mm

Not the easiest method but an alternate solution until we provide one internally.

Dave,

I don't know if you can look at the Solid Edge workflows, but I believe they now have this very option in their system. At least I know they were talking about adding it a couple of years ago.

Solid Edge ST2 does the same *bleep*

Can you check in a more recent version?

This would have come out in the last couple of releases, ST7, or ST8. I'll look at the release notes when I get a chance. Or ask around.

I just saw a dialog box from IronCAD (Skype session with a customer): He was so kind to let me take a screenshot.

They seem to have the option we need Smiley Happy

I don't think this option would be too much trouble in a future release.  Frank, have you raised an ER for this I can't seem to find one.
