Did you mean:

# Limitation of the poisson distribution to lamda = maximum 700 ???

Builder
Hi there!

I am suffering from the limitation of the poisson distribution to lambda <= 700:confused:. Frankly speaking I have no idea, why PlantSimulation 10.x and 11.0 is drawing this borderline.
Anyhow the limitation is not mentioned in the manual at all.

Due to the fact, that PlantSimulation uses an improved random number generator, it should be possible to remove the limit.

Thx!
Markus

Hi Markus,
the exponential function is used for the generation of Poisson distributed numbers.
The values of exponential function must be between the minimal and the maximal representable number.
Therefore Plant Simulation prepares a corresponding message.
A note in the documentation of the Poisson distribution should be inserted.
If you need Poisson distributed numbers with lambda > 700 you can use the sum of multiple Poisson distributed numbers (see A.M. Law; W.D. Kelton: Simulation Modeling & Analysis. McGraw-Hill, 1991, page 349).
For instance, z_poisson(1,500) + z_poisson(1,500) is Poisson distributed with lambda = 1000.

Peter
