data collect and evaluate

Hi Guys,
At the beginning of the simulation study, data are always collected and evaluated.

How are data provided to you?

What techniques do you use to collect data?
What techniques and software do you use to evaluate?
Is the data evaluation for you manual or automated process?
Is an increase in data volume noticeable?
And is Excel still the best friend of data analysis?

Thanks for any input

Hi Nadin,

here are some of my "data experiences":

How are data provided to you?

- depends on the "source" system; eg. csv, txt, xls files from SAP for historical order data, xml files from tecnomatix teamcenter or process designer for planning data, csv, txt or xml files from MES systems or plc failure protocols; sometimes also excel (mainly planning data)

What techniques do you use to collect data?

mainly the data are automated collected (e.g. failure protocols, process time recordings, order data) or planning data; I dont collect data by myself

What techniques and software do you use to evaluate?

most of the data I import (update) directly into Plant Simulation, so I program the evaluation in Plant Simulation and use DataFit to find the distribution parameters.

A part of the data is garbage (e.g. wrong station names --> need to be corrected; outliners --> need to be deleted; empty records --> need to be deleted...). I guess you need to analyse in each case the dataset and create rules for importing the data into Plant Simulation and this you need to do for each datasource.

Is the data evaluation for you manual or automated process?

- create the rules --> manually
- evaluation --> automated

Is an increase in data volume noticeable?

- not for me

And is Excel still the best friend of data analysis?

not for me - I have very bad experiences with big datasets and excel

Mr Bangsow, many thanks for your input.

The topic "data collect and evaluete" is an integral part of every modeling process. That is why I am conscious that everyone is doing this. This is why I am surprised at the low resonance, although the questions do not allow exact conclusions or reproductions.

This question has the following background for me:
PlantSimulation is a part of some companies for some questions. Other questions - especially operational ones - are calculated and animated by their own software solution approaches. Industry4.0 increases the amount of data that can be used for process description. I believe if "data collect and evalue" is a manual and  individual process, this data volume can be difficult traded.
Therefore I ask myself how will be existence of PlantSimulation in Industry4.0 and DigData time.

I have not been actively involved in simulation production for a long time.
At that time it was usual for me (Consulting)
How are data provided to you?
- xls, txt, ValueStreamMapping

What techniques do you use to collect data?
- we said what data (-period) we need
- Column content and format were fixed in advance
principe: if we got data we created a EPK. It connect Data to each other and similar Data collect.

What techniques and software do you use to evaluate?
- software: Excel (VBA) [today I would prefer SQL]
principle: What attribute are exist. Which states accept attribute.
- techniques: conversation and tour
principle: Is process possible. Is the state in the process possible....

Is the data evaluation for you manual or automated process?
- was a manual and individual process (VBA usable in next project)
