Teamcenter - Plant Simulation-based Reconfiguration of Assembly Systems

Presentation Abstract

 

Today’s production world is very volatile and the field of combustion engine assembly represents an extreme shape of that trend. Extremely flexible engine assembly lines with a multitude of product variants show significant cycle time spreads, changing product allocation, high technological variety and short planning cycles. In order to support the planning process solutions like PLM, MES, PPS-systems and discrete simulation are developed. Nevertheless a gap between those systems can be identified. Especially in the case of reconfiguration of existing assembly lines high effort is needed for the connection between data storage systems and simulation tools. Therefore within the planning of a flexible assembly system a new combined planning tool is developed in cooperation of BMW and the Institute of Production Systems (IPS) of TU Dortmund. This tool includes a development of an existing PLM solution of Siemens Teamcenter (TC) and the linkage to material flow simulation in plant simulation (PS). The TC data model is expanded for additional information for simulations such as availability, predecessor stations and PS block classes. In PS routines are developed, which allow for an automated generation of simulation tools. This mechanism is combined with a guided workflow systems and modules to create exports. The automation of data creation, storage and transfer and generation of simulation models help to reduce the planning effort significantly. Therefore the developed tool enables the short term reconfiguration of flexible assembly lines.

 

Speaker Biography:  Christian Siederhofer

 

Christian Siedelhofer, born in 1988, studied mechanical engineering and industrial engineering with a specialization in production sciences at the Technical University of Darmstadt. In 2015 he joined BMW assembly planning for combustion engines. He was part of the planning team of a flexible assembly system and wrote a PhD Thesis at the Institute for Production Systems (IPS) of Technical University of Dortmund. Since 2018 he is leading a project for digitalization of assembly planning and plans assembly lines of the BMW Group in China.
