How to use SQL Server Express with a hardcoded port

A user wanted to add a SQL Server Express instance on a server that already had SQL Server installed, and they wanted to use a hardcoded port address, like:

MyServer,1435\SQLEXPRESS

 

First thing to note is that above is the way to refer to that SQL Server instance from both SQL Server Management Studio and the Rulestream Options dialog, using a comma instead of a colon (as you would expect) to denote the port number:

<serverName>,<portNumber>\<instanceName>

 

Second thing to note is that configuration of how to specify a different port is a little tricky in the SQL Server Configuration Manager.  The information at this StackOverflow post is helpful:
