Disappearing Drawings

N/A
I have a problem. When I try to just show one layer of my drawing, all the lines disappear.

In fact, the only way I can get the lines to appear is to to show all layers - if I go through each layer showing only that layer I never see anything.

How do I sort this?

I even tried moving everything onto the default layer and then deleting all the layers, but I get the message

The active layer cannot be deleted. 'This layer' is active on sheet(s): Component1:View1, Component2:View1, Component3:View1, Component4:View1, Component5:View1, Component6:View1

If I right click on Component1, then it claims to be located on the Default Layer rather than 'This Layer'. There are no other windows open - I am working in model space and only have one (blank) paper sheet in the document.

Your geometry is made up of embedded blocks. These blocks share the same
layers as your drawing. When you Hide All layers you are hiding the layers
on both your drawing and in your blocks. When you select a single layer on
your drawing like Current Timber and choose Show you are telling it to show
that layer on the drawing only. If you want that layer to show up on both
your draiwng and in your blocks you need to choose Show Everywhere. The
reason you can't delete the layer Current Timber is because that layer is
active in your blocks.
Kind of confusing but it helps if you think of it like this:
Show All Layers & Hide All Layers: Hides all layers in the drawing and in
all your blocks (or shows)
Show Only: When you choose this on the drawing you are telling it to show
only that layer on the drawing sheet. The layer with the same name is in a
block file it will not be shown unless you choose Show Everywhere.
I could go on and on but tell me if this makes sense and we can build on it
from there.

I wanted to add that even though you move the block to the Default layer on
the drawing. The geometry is still on the Current Timber layer inside of
the block.
If you rename the Current Timber layer you will notice that is renamed in
all of your blocks also.

Re: Disappearing Drawings

Thank you for that.

I went through every block and moved all the lines onto the default layer, but left the 'Current Timber' layer active in the block, so was still unable to delete the layer. Soon fixed that one Smiley Wink Lesson No.1 - be very thorough when using layers.

So now, when I hide and show the default layer, everything works as expected.

Am I right in saying that if I want to move an item onto another layer, I must move it in both the block and the drawing for it to work as I expect? (If I leave the block on the default layer, then I have to show the default layer everywhere for it to appear, which shows every other block as well, not just the layer I want to look at)

Is there a good tutorial/explanation on how to use layers properly? I have found the BAA CAD Standards (a bit excessive for my use, but I get the idea). I looked at the standard tutorials in SE2D, but they only use the default layer for lines and blocks.

Where did the file come from? Is the original file an AutoCAD file?
There is an issue that occurs when opening AutoCAD files of large drawings.
Large being displayed size, the city of Atlanta, for example.
Specifically, users in AutoCAD will create blocks in a specific location
without specifying an origin relative to the geometry.
The block origin is at zero. The geometry is many kilometers away.
Fit in AutoCAD does NOT take into account the origin of the block as part of
the range of the block.
When this is opened in Solid Edge, the block origin again is defined at zero
and the geometry of the block some large distance away.
Fit in Solid Edge includes the block origin as part of the range of the
block.
So when you Fit the drawing, everything disappears.
This is because the size of the geometry of the block is insignificant
relative to the distance to the origin.
The block is a speck on the screen.
If this is case, we are aware of it and are planning a fix to the problem.

Rick B.

In this case the files were all generated in SolidEdge 2D (except maybe the supplied templates?)

Thanks anyway.

If you can send a file to me, I can take a look.
Describe the steps needed to make geometry go away.
