Distance to a curve

N/A

Hi there.
I want to place some circles at a given distance of a curve (drawn with the Curve
tool).
The only I found is to define an offset curve (offset tool) and connect the center
of the circles to this curve.
The problem is I would like to maintain these relationships while editing the curve.
But the offset curve doesn't update when the orginal curve gets modified.
So it is not of any help.
Alternatively I tried to define a distance between the center of a circle and a
curve, but there seem not to be a way to define a distance along the normal of the
curve...
Is there any way to to want I want?
Thanks a lot!
Cedric.

Draw your circle and dimension from the center of the circle to the curve.
Use the distance between tool, not the Smart Dimension. Select your circle
first then before you select the curve click on the tangent icon in your
edge bar. See attached image.

Cedric,
What version of software are you running (ST2)?

Cedric,
I have attached an ST2 draft file that provides an indirect way.
The attached file has multiple sheets.
Step through the sheets to see how I accomplished this.
If you want to look at the last sheet first just to get an idea
of where this is going, do that first.

Thanks David and Ricky for your answers.

David : unfortunately I can't see anything on the picture which seems almost completely white to me, whether I view it or download it, from both Firefox and IE.
I tried to follow the step sequence you wrote, but in this case the dimension is always between the circle's center and a specific point of the curve. While I want it to be at a certain distance from the curve. (I precise that the curve is of the spline type)

Ricky :
I run SolidEdge 2D Drafting. I think the version is 20, although I can't seem to find this info anywhere... the Software says version 100.00.00.133.
I am really eager to open the file you kindly sent me, but unfortunately, here again there is a problem : when opening the file, SE tells me "the requested file is opened exclusively and cannot be accessed at this time". And there is no way I found to open the file. (If I select "copy", it tells me "cannot open file"...)

Thanks again to you both.

Cedric,
You have V100.
The file I sent is a V102 file.
The files are not backward compatable.
You can return to the web site and download V102.
Uninstall V100 virst.
V103 will be out soon if you want to wait for it.
We made some improvements in the UI in V103.

Thanks Ricky.

Sorry, I had no idea I was so late in version...
I'll update now and get back to you soon.

Best regards!

Hi again Ricky.

I could uninstall my version and install V102.

Though I still get the same error :
"The requested file is opened exclusively and cannot be accessed at this time"

The exe file I am launching manually (to be sure the right exe is launched) has version 102.0.0.116.

Please help!

Cedric,
Check the properties on the file and make sure your email did not set some
kind of file assecc restriction.

Re: Distance to a curve

Hi Ricky.

The file properties show nothing strange except an "unblock" button which I never saw before. I tried all with and without clicking the button, but the result is always the same.

I do not understand the relation to my email, as I have downloaded your file directly from this forum without using my email.
Maybe if it were a zip file, it would reach me as you send it?

For the rest all my old files are opened correctly...

Thanks,
Cedric

PS : is there a way to hide my email address shown in this forum as if it were my nickname? I can't find a way to change that.
