Excel Demands 120mb when starting through links in SE2d

Hi,
I have Solid Edge Version 20 and Excel2007 (the newest one with the altered interface).
I link a very simple spreadsheet (about 20 columns by 2 rows, no calcs, just a data
sheet) to the SolidEdge2D dimensions.
When I press "Update Links" it will open Excel and then gives a "Server Busy" message.
After 20 seconds (and the 120mb of excel Ram system resources are allocated) the
SE2d then can update the links in SE2d drawing.
If I have task manager open it will show excel requires the 120mb to open.
Does anyone know why I'm getting "Server Busy" message, is it an Excel 2007 thing
or a SE2dV20 thing?
Is there a "minimal open" option I can set in Excel?
Thanks,
-Andy

Excel only way?

I can understand why Excel is openned: just in case one of the cells is a calculation
(maybe a more advanced excel worksheet calc), but I'm effectively just reading variables
pulled out of a database (Access).
They are not equation driven.
Is Excel neccessary for the SE2D external data to work?
(I remember a old posting about someone using openoffice spreadsheet)
Can it not be read in from a CSV, Tab delimited format or similar?
Thanks,
-Andy.
