Is there any way to create an attribute from a dimension?

If I create a block that has attributes, is there any way to pass dimensional variables to the block so I can "scan" the drawing file attributes (like AutoCAD) with either a PLM system or third-party application  to determine the dimensional values?

The goal is to enter a number of dimensions for a part once on the drawing when developing the geometery, rather than once there and another time in a spreadsheet or database that will allow me to easily search for parts to re-use them in other designs.

Is there any other workaround besides using blocks/attributes to accomplish the same goal?

Thanks

Any Dimension placed creates a variable in the variable table.  Each variable can be exposed as a file property.  File properties can then be searched or passed to another appiclation.

Thanks for reply.  I'm looking for trying to translate dimensions somehow into conventional attributes like those of a typical ACAD format DWG file.
