While drawing a large item (4.5m long x 3.1m wide x 1.8m tall) with small detail on it (like a 10mm dia hole on a 60mm x 30mm tab) I found it very useful to open two windows on the same item but showing different views or zoom settings on each. 'Arrange' the windows 'Vertical' and I could work quite well. Many commands could be used across both windows. Rick B.'s advice about clicking the RMB after completing a zoom operation to 'unstack' the zoom command and return me to the previously active command was also very useful - I didn't lose the initial tool when zooming or moving within a view.
