Trouble with variable dimensions

I just reinstalled my laptop, including SolidEdge. Before I used the
software quite a bit, but now it doesn't let me make my dimensions variable.
The button in the bar that should change the dimension in variable is simply
not available (greyed out), so all dimensions are dependend, so I can't set
the length of a line using the dimension.
I just opened a new file, draw a line or box and try to put a dimension to
it.
Anyone has an idea on how to fix this?
Thanks a lot!

Make certain Maintain Relationships is activated under the Tools tab.
There is a quirk. Even thoug the driving/driven button is greyed out in the
bar you can still change the status once the dimension is placed. Hange the
dimension, select the value and there will be another button beside the
value.
