dxf or dwg file import/export

What is the proper procedure to bring these files into free2d so that all of the
layers are intact as the original AutoCAD file and then be able to save it back
to autocad format when done editing for my maintenance person so that he can edit
it in his autocad?

You are going to have to be more specific. When you open the AutoCAD file,
the layers are translated.
What specific problem are you seeing?

I just want to be able to bring in the Autocad file and work with it and be able
to save it back to Autocad format so that my shop supervisor can use it in his version
of Autocad and still have the layers remain intact without all the data being moved
to 1 layer. I loaded the software in ISO format and I wondered if I should have
used ANSI instead.

John,
The geometry should remain on the same layers. If you open an AutoCAD file
in Solid Edge, do you see the layers from the original AutoCAD file?
The ISO format sets up a metric template as the default. ANSI sets up an
inch template as the default. Are the original AutoCAD files inch or metric?
