limitation of free 2d compared to l

it is stated in solid Edge help
"The Solid Edge 2D Drafting application is available in two configurations: free
and with maintenance. The free standalone version centers on draft and includes
the ability to view native documents as well as participate in collaborative efforts.
The maintenance version is more robust and includes document management components
and technical support from the GTAC organization."
what is exactly the difference? what features are not available in free2d but available
in "with maintenance" version?
please advise...

You must be an existing Solid Edge customer to obtain the maintenance
version of 2D Drafting. You must own at least one copy of Solid Edge. Do you
have a Solid Edge license?

Re: limitation of free 2d compared to l

There are actually 3 different ways to get Drafting with Solid Edge.
The most extensive is to purchase Solid Edge. The Drafting with Solid Edge
is not called 2D Drafting and allows you to derive drawings from the 3D
Models that you create. This is in addition to creating any 2D drawings
manually. This software has nothing taken away with respect to drawing
creation in Solid Edge. When you purchase Solid Edge you do not need
anything additional to create drawings.
Solid Edge 2D Drafting is a sub set of the overall Solid Edge Drafting
software. It does not allow you to derive the drawings from 3D models
created with Solid Edge. The commands to derive drawings from 3D Models have
been taken away. There are two different versions of 2D Drafting. I will
explain these by license feature.
1. solidedge2ddrafting - This is the free version of Solid Edge 2D Drafting.
· It is a completely separate executable than Solid Edge.
· It is available as a downloaded self extracting executable from
the web. CDs will be limited.
· The user can register again and obtain a new license to continue
use. Most likely the next version will be available for download.
· There is no TAC support for this version.
· There are no service pack updates.
· The startup screen will have the Evolve to 3D content and other
marketing type stuff on it.
· There is no applications interface (API).
· It does not support managed document workflows (Insight and
Teamcenter Express).

2. solidedge2ddraftingm - This is the maintenance version of Solid Edge 2D
Drafting.
· It is the same executable as Solid Edge.
· The installation is the same as the Solid Edge installation with a
solidedge2ddraftingm license dropped in.
· There is not a separate DVD for solidedge2ddraftingm, only a
separate license.
· The user must have at least one license of Solid Edge to get a
maintenance license of solidedge2ddraftingm.
· The license solidedge2ddraftingm is fixed/node locked or floating
· The users get full TAC support.
· There will be service pack updates.
· The startup screen will be more like the Solid Edge startup
screen.
· It does have an applications interface (API) that is limited to
Draft files and only 2D drafting objects.
· It supports managed document workflows (Insight and Teamcenter
Express).

Hi Rick,
Regarding the maintenance version of solid egde 2D mentioned in 2. above you say you need a solid edge installation. What about just NX installations?

Re: limitation of free 2d compared to l

Clayton,
No. Solid Edge 2D Drafting Maintenance is Solid Edge with a different license dropped in. You install Solid Edge, not the free download. Then you drop in a "solidedge2ddraftingm" license. The free 2D Drafting download is a stripped down version of Solid Edge. It is not just UI. Much of the software is removed to reduce size.
