2D Free and SE Viewer

I installed the free 2D version of Solid Edge on the PC of my colleague.

I was surprised the installation is identical to mine, the only difference is the license file.

But the biggest surprise came after that.

He can open 2D files, but can't view 3D! Therefor he needs the viewer, but...

You can't install the viewer next to Solid Edge...

Why can't the free 2D version have the functionality like the viewer?

Re: 2D Free and SE Viewer

Solid Edge Viewer is part of Solid Edge Installation.
Just have a look in the start menu.

Re: 2D Free and SE Viewer

I mean, When you open a draft, you see views of parts and assembly's.

Why can't he just open the part/assembly/sheet metal by double click on the view, just like in the full installation?

Just open the file and look, nothing more.

I fully understand it is free, so you can't have full functionality, but why not the best of 2 free versions together?

You can't install the viewer because it is already installed

I agree it would be great but maybe not everybody would like a full installation just to view files.

Anyway about the reasons only Siemens can answer.

[ Edited ]

Thanks for thinking with me.

So I went to the PC of my collegue.

I double clicked on an assembly: SE free 2D opens. Why?? SE free can't handle this file.

So I changed the "open with" for asm files to the viewer. Ever tried to find the exe? It's well hidden.

Now the icon for an asm file is the same as a txt file.

How do I have to explain this to someone who can barely work with a computer?

So my suggestion is:

1: People install SE free 2d

SE is installed, draft has full functionality for dft (like now) and viewer functionality for the rest.

double click on a drawing view opens the part/assembly/...

2: People only want to view

They install the viewer like it is now.

Re: 2D Free and SE Viewer

Is it still true that you cannot have the Free 2D drafting pkg loaded and run the 3D viewer?  We have user (Mfg engr) that uses the viewer to see the models in order to assist them with the creation of BOM & RTG's.  They also need the free 2D dft for obtaining surface area, lengths, and more to establish qt'y info for the BOM's.

This has been a big inconvienience for us.  We have floating license's, but they really don't need a full version of Solid Edge for what they do.  Any options?

Re: 2D Free and SE Viewer

I believe the seviewer is installed but no Start menu entry for it with ST9.

Located here:

C:\Program Files\Solid Edge ST9\Program\win32

Re: 2D Free and SE Viewer

The seviewer is not installed with base ST9.  The seviewer is now installed with MP1 and higher and there is no start menu created.

Re: 2D Free and SE Viewer

And if using Free2D, no MP's unless you are under maintenance... correct?

Re: 2D Free and SE Viewer

Correct!  If you do not have any Solid Edge maintenace (for any product) then you will not have access to maintenance packs if running Free 2D only.
