There are some things you lose when not using the Hardware driven options, and performance will suffer.  Don't have any recommendations as we are running workstation cards and thus are always using Hardware driven (advanced).  All has to do with the Graphics adapter your PC has in it and the correct and up to date driver being installed.

And is this the graphics driver you have installed?

FYI, the Intel HD 4000 is an integrated GPU so uses the system RAM for graphics processing.  You can tweak the graphics settings to allocate more of your 8 GB system RAM to the video card -- this may help with your overall graphics performance.  Of course allocating more RAM to graphics then reduces the amount of RAM available to the OS and Solid Edge.  Such is the way of integrated GPUs :-( but you may be able to find a happy medium between OS and graphics RAM.  That or upgrade to 16 GB RAM...

@uk_dave Would the memory allocation (or lack of) stop it from displaying a blank PAR file though?

@KennyG no I would not expect increasing the video RAM to resolve the not being able to open a new .par file but my comment was in response to @scott_lester's comment...

@uk_dave  I was assuming that was because he was running in "Software driven".

@scott_lester I don't know much about the Intel embedded HD graphics, but I do believe the model you have supports OpenGL and should work in "Hardware driven", but it has to be the correct driver for Windows 10.  The one I posted was the latest I could find for the HD 4000 graphics for Windows 10.  If it is newer than the version you have installed, then I would try it.
