Create New Part Copies in Assemblies Instead of Replacing - ST8

Is it possible to make new copies of parts in top down assemblies instead of replacing them?

I want to create new modified parts from existing without removing them from the assembly as the new versions are experimental and the existing are not obsolete.

What might be the preferred workflow for this?

Thanks,

Matt

You could, from the assembly, go into the part you want a copy of, then go do a save COPY as......Not sure if that is what your'e looking for. It won't replace the part that is in the assembly, just saves out a copy of it.

I was hoping to be able to create a copy in place inside the assembly, hide the existing, and modify the new copy to my liking.  Basically like the replace a part with copy option, but keeping both copies.

In my drafts, I would then be able to show different layouts of the assembly by showing/hiding the different parts in the views.

Closest thing I can think of would be the save copy as command, then bring that copy in and match coordinate systems to the original part.

Hi,

You should be using "Replace part with Copy" from Home tab & Modify group.

@Imics, That still replaces (doesn't keep) the previous part with the copy, no?

This is a configuration issue.

Yeah, basically. He'll have to insert a second part where the first one is and turn them on/off with cfgs.

That's were I was heading...  I just wanted to ask first just in case there was another option.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
