Data Management on Google Drive

Hello,

Do some of you have a link to a guide, how to get Data Management to work on Google Drive? Including indexing.

ST10

We got the system to save and autoname files etc., but it always reset the path to default local folder - even when I change it to Google Team Drive.

We are currently 2 users, and we would obvious like to use the same Google Team Drive (already created it etc.)

Hi @Kenneth

as my understanding is/was, any cloud beased save mechanism works with a local cahce system, where - in Ypu case - Google Drive - synchonize the files with the Google Cloud server to any member/user cache of the sharing team.

To get this work properly, You have to tunr on the option witihn the Manage tab of Solid Edge Options.

And for this - now local - disc and folder sstem, You also can use the Fast Search of Solid Edge, as any other user of this Google Drive will do or can do.

You will not directly use the cloud storage, only the cahced files.

Everything else - IMHO - will not make to much sense.

Imagine to open an assembly with only 1000 parts in it, and You have to open this via internet from Google Drive (depending on You download speed) but what will if, if YOu have to save back all files too?

You only save it locally, with additionally synchronizing those data to the cloud.

Wolfgang

Hmm... would be great with some official documentation how to enable this.

So we're supposed to both sync local folders with Google Drive?

We already enabled Data Management, as in your screenshot. We where confused, that we could not select our Google Drive folder.

We will try to make it point to a local folder then, and then make Google Drive sync to that folder, on all computers.

Seems a bit confusing, specially since Solid Edge state on the product page, that is fast to setup and require no IT guys.

Hi @Kenneth

I can not see any difference between what You say and what the ideo behind a clod storage is.

When You take access to a Google Drive, that is, a drive is usable locally since YOu have installed "Backup and Sync" by Google, defining which folders should be cached (synchtonized) on Your local disc.

That's it.

Use this local folders as You will do with any other folders on Your computer, but only be aware about, that this folder structure now is synchronized to the Google Drive (or One Drive or DropBox, or to whatever Cloud System You will use. There are also availbale private cloud systems for Your loal network, allowing You to use a NAS box with Unix operating system and the advantage of Fast Search on Your local disc.)

I'm not an real IT specialist but as far as I know and as I have understood it, all cloud systems will work in the same way.

The install a local directory structure to which You save and from where YOu get Your data, in the same way as with every other local data.

But may be there is an IT profi here, who can enlight this issue better than I can.

Thats not how we use Google Drive today, thats might what confused us.

We have installed the Google Drive software, so it map our Team Drives as a local drive to our computers.

We will try to make a folder and sync it with google drive Smiley Happy

Thanks for the help.

Hi @Kenneth

but You say "it" has mapped Your Team Drives to a local drive.

And now the question is: "Do You use this local dirve or do You not use it?"

This is what I have mentioned. Use this local mapped drive as normal folders too and use them for Fast Search.

Nothing more to do, isn't it?

Wolfgang

Seems Google changed it.

I installed the Google App, now called Drive File Stream (we use G Suite, business solution).

It map our Google Drive as a local network drive.

They changed this within the last month.

The sync stuff is gone, or so it seems, now replaced by Drive File Stream.

Solid Edge does not save the path, when I change it to my Drive File Stream by Google Drive - it just go back to blank.

I click the "Add" button and select the File Steam Drive.

But the window is blank when I open SE again - it does not save the path Smiley Sad

I installed Backup and Sync.

It's only available for Personal Use - Business version is File Stream.

I can only sync local folders to My Drive (my personal google drive).

That does not work. I need to store the files on our shared Team Drive.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

Hi @Kenneth

OK, I have seen that there are changes in the policy of "Google Drive" or whatever the new name may be.

I fthe personal vesion wil not fullfill the needs, I would like to say, that there are other solutions available, doing at least a similar if not better jog.

So I would consider OneDirve or DropBox and then decide for "my" best solution.

If this might not be Google, then OK, then it will be one of the others.

Hi,

We use dropbox.. install it and change the file location, via settings in dropbox, to c: so your c: drive has a folder c:\dropbox.
Put all your settings, like reports, templates, material, etc. and macros to this dropbox drive in a subfolder. and once satisfied, save this personalisation in dropbox.

Setting up the next workstation is easy now, install dropbox, sign in to account, wait till the dropbox is synchronised and deploy the saved setting to the workstation... and have fun... everything is local now, thus quick...

And the build in datamanagement works... the dropbox folder is green synchronised..

This works awesone...

Kind regards,
