From a step file to a part file

Valued Contributor

Hi,

We get step files from different suppliers.

How can we save them as a part file in SE without 100.000 random files being created in the same folder?

If I try to open as a part, then 99% of the machine is transparent.

If I try to open and save as an assembly, then it create a gazillion files in the same folder.

We just need to save it as a single part file.

How can we do that?

I would create a scratch folder, open the step as an assembly, save it. Open a new part and do a insert part copy with the merge bodies option set.

The reason it's 99% transparent when you open it as a part is that all those parts that were in the assembly are now separate bodies in the new part. Only one body can be active and opaque. It will not appear transparent when inserted into another assembly.

This is due to the multi-body modeling highlighting the active body.  You can change, turn off, this option and show all parts solid.  just e advised this will also effect IPA in the Assy mode...

Can you supply a screen shot of the part pathfinder when you open it in part? You may have to move some entities from Construction bodies to design bodies.

This seems like the best solution for me.

Does not matter if the part itself is mostly transparent, as long its solid when inserted into assemblies Smiley Very Happy

(not so frustrated anymore).

Would be awesome though, if they added an "Save as Part" feature to assemblies, but thats another story.

@kennith

You can create a 1 pc part in two ways:

1.) from the part environment Boolean all the bodies into one.

2.) from the assy, use auto simplify (SE2019) and save the result as a part.
