Are you looking at drawn/forming sheet metal or what is known as "straight break" sheet metal? They are completely different processes- one requires dies and the other flat pattern and break press.

The manufacturing process will guide how you model the part.  Your second image looks more like an injection molded piece and should be modeled in the part environment.  It might be possible to take the first image and make it look like the second with welding, grinding and other secondary operations but that might not be feasible for higher volume and because of costs.
