How do you flatten a STEP file what you havent created yourself?

Hi All,

Help would be much appreciated.

Im totally fine with creating parts myself in sheet metal & flattening. When it comes to a customer sending a STEP files I cant seem to follow the same processes.

When I click "Flatten" my part seems to disappear.

Anyone had same problem or can anyone help?

Many Thanks,

Darren

Just after the STEP import I would do this steps before try to flatten it:

- use the optimize command under the inspection tab

- use the convert to sheet metal in tools tab

sorry  i can post an italian language image only but the icons must match

Daren,

Well my guess is that these SM parts from other CAD systems do not have the intelligence to unfold. Try using the Ordered Environment to manual unfold each bend.

If not you may need to remake the part.

One other note on the disappearing stuff: Sometimes due to the orientation of the part imported to the Coordinate System, part images after flattening can go off screen. So be sure to "Zoom All" just to make sure this didn'r happen.

Did you try to import the STEP in ordered environment instead of synchronous ?

Can you post the STEP file for a test ride ?

I can flatten it very easily following my previous advise to use the "optimeze" and "converto to SM" tools.

On the Tools tab select the command "Thin Part to Sheet Metal" command in the Transform section.  Once transformed, it will flatten.
