We would like to know how people are using the Solid Edge Portal today.
If you use it, please a take moment to share what you have done in the comments below (or you can PM me if you'd rather remain private)
If you haven't tried it yet, what would you like to use the Portal for?
let me try to explain how we think to us Solid Edge Portal.
It can be great for 3D layouts to have a first overview how we think a plant (equipment) can be looking for our customers.
In addition, it can be great for our construction side to have an overview.
For collaboration in not to deep detailing it can be great too in the moment.
I see not in the moment the possibility to have an exact measurement.
The measurement of the software tool it is here used was also not exact.
One thing we are missing here if the portal is from Siemens how we can get the guaranty that our files will not use in a way we do not want.
Here two example how we hope in minimum the visualisation is working. In this HTML file are all functions we think they are useful. Only textures cannot shown. This is for a Layout for Customers better.
I'm revealing my ignorance here by asking you to explain what SE Portal is. Many say that there are no stupid questions but this sure seems like one.
The Portal is a web application that allows you to upload files and share them with other users.
It currently supports online markups. (Measurements are on the roadmap)
At this time there are two access/share modes for collaborators: View Only and View+Download.
In View Only mode only the display data is available to the collaborator.
It is currently in beta and can found at:
Login using the same account (Webkey) you use to access this forum.
Also, it's free for up to 5GB of storage.
Give it a try.
Amy, thank you for asking for feedback. I have tried the portal and would like to use it for the following:
What I have seen so far with the portal is very good and I realize it is still in beta. I really like the design, find it very user friendly, and the performance it good. However, without the ability to measure files (most important), properly display Solid Edge drawings (very important), or display PDF files (somewhat important), I can’t fully use the portal for my needs yet.
I heard of someone using Portal for training purposes; they uploaded a 3D model of their plant, and show this to new staff on a tablet - how to get around, where everything is, etc. This replaces printed 2D drawing/map. Suppose it means too that staff can view on their smartphones as they're walking around.
Any other peeps using it for less obvious things like this?
The portal accepts the following file types:
Native Solid Edge models
Sheet metal (*.psm)
Assembly (*.asm) (*.zip) (*.7z) (*.rar)
To create a zipped assembly in Solid Edge, use the Application menu→Share tab→Pack and Go command.
Neutral format for collaboration
JT Open CAD file format (*.jt), containing mesh bodies, wireframe data, and solid data for parts, sheet metal, and assemblies.
HOOPS Stream File (*.hsf)
Other CAD files
CATIA V4 (*.model)
CATIA V5 and V6 (*.CATPart, *.3dxml, *.cgr)
Rhino 3D (*.3dm)
Virtual Reality Modeling Language (*.wrl)
Solid Edge draft (*.dft)
AutoCAD drawings (*.dwg)
STL files (.stl) containing data used in 3D printing and computer-aided manufacturing to produce prototypes of 3D CAD models. STL files only describe the surface geometry of a three-dimensional object. They are unit-less and have no representation of color, texture, or other common model attributes.
Add presentation-quality images of individual parts and entire assemblies

Also, I'm working with the extended team to help you with the error of IGES and STEP files not opening. Stay tuned!
Both IGES and STEP file are supported. Can you share the project with me (email@example.com)? I'd like to take a closer look at the files to figure out why they are failing for you.
Did you generate these files?
